Rakuten Kobo has unveiled the new Kobo Clara 2E – the company’s first eReader made with ocean bound and recycled plastic – which includes Bluetooth and is fully waterproof.
The device has a 6-inch HD E Ink Carta 1200 glare-free touchscreen with a resolution of 1448 x 1072 (300ppi).
The Kobo Clara 2E reinforces Rakuten Kobo’s commitment to transition to certified recycled materials when possible.
In the next year the company plans to divert more than 200,000 plastic bottles from our oceans as well as more than a million CDs and DVDs from landfill which can be re-purpose and recycled to create the next generation of devices.
Tech Guide has taken a hands-on look at the Kobo Clara 2E which is noticeably thin (8.66mm) and light (it only weighs 171g).
It is no effort to hold the eReader and get lost in a book for hours at a time.
The screen is crisp and clear so you can easily and comfortably devour the book you’re reading.
The device also has a dark mode along with ComfortLight Pro with blue light reduction so even when you’re doing some light night reading it’s not going to affect your sleep.
“Kobo Clara 2E is about living our values: providing a better reading experience while also taking an important step toward sustainability,” said Michael Tamblyn, CEO, Rakuten Kobo.
“We believe that each small, thoughtful, and intentionally placed act can make a meaningful impact.
“So, we’re starting by incorporating recycled materials into the device, accessories and packaging to complement our book lovers’ favourite features, like waterproofing and Bluetooth wireless technology so they can listen to their favourite audiobooks.”
The Kobo Clara 2E has 16GB of storage which is enough room for your entire library of ebooks and Kobo audiobooks.
That’s enough room for up to 12,000 ebooks or 75 Kobo audiobooks.
The device has Bluetooth onboard so you can pair your favourite wireless earphones or headphones and listen to a Kobo audiobook instead of reading.
It also has an a 1500mAh battery which will provide weeks of reading before you need to recharge.
The Kobo Clara 2E is the company’s first fully waterproof 6-inch eReader which can withstand being submerged in 2m of water for up to an hour.
Of course, the Kobo Clara 2E includes the Kobo Store which allows readers to quickly search, discover and purchase the latest stories.
The Kobo readers also have built in local library borrowing via OverDrive where ebooks can be borrowed free if you have a library card and depending on local library availability.
There are also a number of SleepCovers for the Kobo Clara 2E which are also made from recycled materials.
The SleepCover comes in three colours: Coral Reef Orange, Sea Glass Green and Black.
The Kobo Clara 2E eReader will be priced at $229.95.
Preorders are available now in stores and online ahead of launch on September 22.
