In-ear headphones, or earbuds, are the convenient and portable alternative to large headphones – the perfect listening companion for travelling or while you’re exercising. For a long time, however, they lacked the sound quality of the more powerful siblings. Now with continued technology improvements, this is far less the case.

While there’s a near endless list of regular earbuds for casual listening, if you’re looking for a high-quality listening experience, you’ve got to head to the top-of-the-range products. Here’s a look at the leading premium earbuds for 2022.

Sleek and stylish, Bowers & Wilkins flagship noise-cancelling PI7 earbuds deliver a wide and dynamic sound via two dedicated drivers with dedicated amps. In addition to the premium sound, it comes with a wireless charging case that converts into a transceiver allowing the case to plug into an aeroplane’s inflight entertainment system and wirelessly stream audio from the case to the earbuds. They are also IPX54 splash-proof and have a four-hour battery life with noise cancelling on and four extra charges from the case.

The Danish brand Bang and Olufsen have a reputation for luxury. Its latest earbuds, Beoplay EQ, feature the brand’s signature premium design details such as an aluminium-shelled case with a smooth opening and aluminium accent touch controls on the buds themselves. They offer high-quality sound, adaptive noise cancellation, a natural-sounding transparency mode and multipoint Bluetooth pairing for connecting to a smartphone and computer simultaneously.

They look stylish and feature a comfortable, lightweight build and the battery life is rated at around six and a half hours with extra two charges from the case, which has USB-C and wireless charging.

These true-wireless earbuds from the South Korea-based Astell & Kern are reportedly among the best-sounding on the market offering clean, articulate sound with fast, well-defined bass. They come in a slightly bigger design than other options and for making calls with them, they offer less reduction in background noise compared with say AirPods.

Features include multipoint Bluetooth pairing to simultaneously pair them with two devices and wear sensors that pause the music when they are taken out of your ears. Battery life is rated at six hours at medium volume levels, with an additional three charges from the case.

The New York-based company Master and Dynamic have been making high-quality earbuds for a while and its latest model lives up to its outstanding reputation. They offer a great blend of style and audio quality, providing a rich sound and superior build quality crafted in ceramic and stainless steel with handcrafted acetate finishes.

The premium earbuds are renowned for their ergonomic fit, streamlined form and five ear tip sizes maximising comfort. Features include hybrid noise-cancelling capabilities, Bluetooth function, up to 12 hours of playtime and 100 per cent charge in 45 minutes. For a luxury spin, previous models of these true wireless earbuds were used by Louis Vuitton as the base for its designer earbuds.

The Beats Powerhouse Pro are the ultimate earbuds for an active lifestyle. Great for sports and at the gym, they are sweatproof, adjustable and flexible and come with secure-fit ear hooks designed for lightweight comfort and stability.

They offer nine hours of battery life with an additional two charges from the case which is relatively decent although they are lacking some of the in-depth musical performance of some premium brands on the market.

Popular for its overall excellence, not only do Sony’s flagship earbuds offer some of the best noise cancellations of any true wireless earbuds, but they also provide detailed audio and decent battery life.

Voted the best in-ear headphones at the TechRadar Choice Awards 2021, they feature an updated ergonomic design that’s comfortable and compact. The premium earbuds also take features from its larger over-ear sibling, the Sony WH-1000XM4, such as Speak-To-Chat, DSEE Extreme audio upscaling, and adaptive noise cancellation.
