The Lypertek PurePlay Z5 true wireless and noise canceling earbuds are ideal travel companions.
Back in February, I gave the Lypertek PurePlay Z5 noise-canceling earbuds a glowing review. I thought they were one of the best pairs of earbuds on the market. Lypertek may not be a household name, but it would be a big mistake not to take a closer look at this company’s earbuds that consistently knock the competition out of the park.
The price of the Lypertek PurePlay Z5 is being slashed today from $129 / £119 / €139to just $79 / £79 / €89. I don’t usually write about price cuts, but as the PurePlay Z5 are such a fine-sounding pair of earbuds, I thought I’d revisit my review from earlier this year.
The PurePlay Z5 are Lypertek’s first pair of true wireless earbuds featuring Hybrid Active Noise-Cancelling technology and a completely new PureControl ANC app. In addition, the app has practical features like a safe mode where the user can assign double-tap commands to the touch controls to avoid accidental presses that can break the musical mood when listening to a favorite track.
The new Lypertek PurePlay Z5 are a premium sounding pair of hybrid noise canceling and support the ... [+] latest Bluetooth audio codecs.
Open the box of the PurePlay Z5 and the first thing you’ll see is a note saying: “THIS IS IMPORTANT.” A message then explains how essential it is to choose the correct size and type of ear tip to get the best sound quality. Then, in bold type, the message reiterates: “Bad Seal = Thin sound and loss of bass.” Hallelujah! It’s about time every earbud manufacturer proclaimed how important ear tip choice is for great sound. Lypertek provides a superb selection of ear tips in the box, including various sizes of silicone and memory foam styles.
The Lypertek app takes you through an easy setup process that ensures you get the best sound from the earbuds. At this point, it’s worth pointing out that the PurePlay Z5 are well built, but I wouldn’t describe them as luxury. If you’re a person who places a big emphasis on aesthetics, these earbuds won’t set your pulse racing. Although the PurePlay Z5 may not fulfill everyone’s fashion dreams, the sound is superb… so stick with me.
As with most earbuds, the PurePlay Z5 can be controlled using touch pads on each earbud. The earbuds also have built-in microphones for making phone calls and using a voice assistant like Siri or Google Assistant. The chipset at the heart of these earbuds is from Qualcomm, so there’s also support for cVc 8.0 noise-canceling microphones cutting out background noise and producing clearer speech.
The Lypertek PurePlay Z5 are stored in a charging case which can provide up to 28 hours of playing ... [+] time.
The Lypertek PurePlay Z5 earbuds support Qualcomm’s aptX Adaptive Bluetooth audio codec and a low-latency mode for watching videos and gaming. There’s also support for the AAC codec used by Apple on its iOS devices. Qualcomm chipsets cost more, but the company has raised the Bluetooth audio standard to a new level. So if your true wireless earbuds don’t use a Qualcomm chipset, you’re probably not going to get the best sound possible. Controversial view? Maybe.
These new earbuds are Lypertek’s first to use Hybrid Adaptive Noise-Canceling technology. Noise cancelation technology has come a long way recently and the quality of the ANC used on the PurePlay Z5 is exemplary. These earbuds have excellent volume levels, innovative noise cancelation and a great ear-tip design that eliminates unwanted noise. You get to enjoy the music without the irritating roar of a jet engine or the sound of rubber on asphalt. I think the ANC used on the PurePlay is as good as the superb Technics EAH-AZ60 I reviewed back in November.
These earbuds have an Ambient Sound Mode that enables a certain level of external noise to bleed through the music. However, Lypertek has taken this feature further with its exclusive Auto-Ambient Mode. This mode reduces the need to use the earbud controls by automatically turning on the Ambient Sound Mode whenever the user stops or pauses the audio. Then, when the music begins playing again, the earbuds automatically switch back to the default listening mode. This feature can be turned on using the PurePlay ANC app and is brilliant for when you’re listening out for a travel announcement.
Although they are well made, the Lypertek PurePlay Z5 are fairly conservative in appearance, perhaps ... [+] because the bulk of the budget has been spent on the audio circuits.
The Lypertek app has handy features such as customizable EQ controls and the LDX Audio Mode. This tone control is designed to get the best sound from the PurePlay Z5. LDX Mode takes sound to a new level by creating a bigger impact and a wider soundstage. It’s a bit like a Loudness button.
Next, we come to the all-important sound quality. To give these earbuds a proper musical workout, I fired up TIDAL and chose the latest album from the fantastic Punch Brothers. “Hell On Church Street” is superbly recorded and is the perfect test for these earbuds. The sound was stunning and it’s all down to the powerful 10mm dynamic drivers that deliver a rich and deep bass that’s beautifully controlled and never becomes flabby or undisciplined. The treble is superbly clear and has a silky quality while sitting nicely above the forward mid-range. The sound these earbuds produce is nothing short of exceptional. I was tapping my toes in no time and that’s always a sign of a great pair of earbuds.
A full charge of the PurePlay Z5 provides up to seven hours of playing time before the earbuds need to be popped back into the charging case for a top-up. However, with the ANC turned on, that figure drops to four hours, not quite long enough for crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The case can hold 28 hours of playing time, but that figure drops to around 16 hours with ANC always on. The charging case can be recharged using a USB-C cable or any Qi-compatible charging mat and it also supports Fast Charge technology.
Verdict: The Lypertek PurePlay Z5 may not be the prettiest pair of true wireless earbuds on the market, but most of the budget has gone into making these some of the best-sounding earbuds for the price. The Hybrid Adaptive Noise-Canceling technology is class-leading and blocks out plenty of sound without impacting audio quality. Battery life is good, although not brilliant. I’d rather have great sound than mediocre audio for a few more hours. With the PurePlay Z5, Lypertek has created a fabulous pair of true wireless earbuds that will delight music lovers who want the best sound and effective ANC. At his new lower price, the Z5 earbuds are an absolute steal.
Pricing & Availability: The Lypertek PurePlay Z5 will be available from Amazon UK and Amazon USA from today (July 25, 2022). The price will be $79 / £79 / €89.
