The RPT-02 SOL, the first batch of solar power headphones that charge on their own, have been unveiled by sports giant Adidas.

The headphones, that cost $230 (Rs 18,322), are powered by Exeger’s Powerfoyle solar cells. The solar cells can supply close to 80 hours of “reserve” battery life even in a room with no sunshine.

Though the active noise cancellation feature and the fancy audio codecs may be missing from the headphones, the Adidas Los Angeles model does boast of a microphone, a USB-C port for backup charging, and IPX4 water protection.

Earbuds made by Urbanista, a Swedish audio based company, also employ Powerfoyle’s technology to automatically recharge themselves. The Urbanista Phoenix may be the first truly wireless earphones with noise cancellation and solar-powered charging in the world.

With Exeger’s Powerfoyle technology, batteries are constantly charged using a thin plastic film that changes light. The headphones are IPX4 splash- and sweat-proof and have physical controls; the mobile app also displays charge and battery status.

The option to never put a wire into your earbuds or headphones again sounds like a dream come true, even though the current generation of earbuds and headphones do not need to be charged every day and are backed by fast charging capabilities.

These new Adidas solar power headphones (RPT-02 SOL) demonstrate that technology isn’t just for low-powered smartphones. Of course, how well they sound will determine how successful the RPT-02 SOLs are, but if their production can equal their sustainability credentials, Adidas will undoubtedly be onto a hit.
